"I did what was necessary," Devin returns. He is not a hero, though the Fool is not the first to call him one in this sort of light. Valdis had done it before, and Aly in her own way, too. All of them paired with needling of one variety or another.

After staring at it for a moment, Devin takes the cloth and covers one black eye with it. Most of the swelling has already gone down, but ice or anything cold still brought some relief from the constant ache that was most of his body. He studies the Fool in silence, weighing his expression and the likelihood that evasion will do Devin any good.

"Near as I can tell, I've broken or fractured most of my ribs, and definitely more than I've broken at any one time before," he answers at length. "I probably have a few other small fractures in my facial bones at the very least, and judging from the spectacular rainbow of color on my torso, some minor internal bleeding from the breaks. None of it is life-threatening; given how she fell, I'm fortunate she didn't break my spine or crush my skull." Devin cracks a wry smile at the Fool from behind the cloth. "I've had a lot worse. I'll heal in a few days."
