Pity is not among the things Devin feels when he recalls the trauma he had seen the Fool endure. Sorrow, yes, and a vague sense of effectively pointless anger for whatever or whoever did that to him, but it is only with long practice that Devin's own traumas don't show up in pauses that last a second too long or glimmers of unwelcome emotion. Sometimes, even that isn't enough. The Dreaming has not been gracious to either of them in revealing their pasts.

There's some business dealings there, presumably, since they aren't fighting over turf out in the open. Going after Dreamfolk isn't popular - we vanish too frequently to make regular targets in the long-term, not to mention that many of us are overpowered, but apparently they've deemed it worth the risk. I believe they're an up-and-coming group trying to build a reputation, or else have few better options. There's instability that can be taken advantage of."
