[EVENT] THE FOG COMES - Ship's Return

Characters: ALL
Date: July 10
Location: Aifaran Harbour
Situation: The Narrakra has returned, but those aboard are not the same as when they left...
Warnings/Rating: Creepy descriptions of things?

The night of the Narrakra's return, fog poured into Aifaran's harbour. It was thick, soupy and cloying in the summer heat, swirling and shifting with every change in the air, but never dissipating. Many Dreamfolk may feel heavy tension in the air, an eerie stillness about the night that seems unnervingly familiar. But beyond the occasional, inexplicable power outage, nothing seems to be otherwise amiss.

The Narrakra limps into the dockyard port on a single engine in the early hours of the 10th, steering itself erratically toward the nearest berth. The dock workers, having not expected to see a Sentry ship sliding out of the pea-soup fog, are quick to raise the alarm, which is hurriedly passed to a runner to bring to the nearest Sentry outpost. Heavy pylons keep the Narrakra from outright running into the dock itself, as the engine sputters and dies, leaving the ship without steering.

The ship itself is in poor condition, metal hull dented and scarred as if it had been in combat with some great sea beast. Deep gouges, like something had hurled sharp points into the metal sides and pulled, some even deep enough that glimpses of the hull's structural support can be seen. In other places on the exterior, what appears to be an advanced stage of corrosion and rust have affected sections of the ship, but not in any uniform way. A handrail might be corroded to the point of the metal disintegrating at a touch, but the stairwell next to it still gleaming as if it had just been put into place.

---

OOC Notes: This is the culmination event for the Ships in the Night plot that's been ongoing for the last few months, although the outcome will play into future metaplot. Characters can witness the Narrakra's not-so-triumphant return at the docks, speculate on where it's been and what could have caused its disappearance, question the crew (if they can get past the Sentry), or sneak aboard the ship to do some reconnaissance and potentially find things...

Alice always had a soft spot for cats, even if some of them could be condescending wastrels who had a talent for giving cryptic advice that only ever made sense in hindsight.

Konoe was, fortunately, not on that particularly short list, and brief as their initial chat had been, her opinion stayed fairly neutral.

She didn't touch him, but instead approached from the side slowly.

"Are you ill?" She asked. "Should I get a bucket?"

Not that it made much difference - the ship was already filthy. But she wanted to make sure Konoe was responsive.

There was a snap and a flash from Alice's Yimo as she took a shot of the pirate pilfering the 'goods'.

"Caught red-handed," she said crossly.

"You're a sentry aren't you? Shouldn't you be keeping watch?"

"Meoni didn't make it."

There are two survivors before them now, and this one the Fool surmises must be Al'amar, of Devin's dreams. He looks between the two haggard women, his brows drawn together into a frown of unhappiness and dismay for them, and then to Devin as though some part of him hopes that his friend will have seen some piece of the puzzle that the Fool has overlooked.

He takes a breath and turns his eyes to the pair again. "I am so sorry," he tells them softly. He reaches out to Eitria as though he might touch her arm, before thinking better of it.

The pronunciation is off, but it's definitely her name, and that's all the proof Sheena needs that this is Al'amar. She has dozens of questions for her--the top one being "how" followed by "why". But, she can't bombard her with them--not after what she's been through, but what should she say? She won't hurt her? Or she's safe at home now?

The words freeze on the ninja's tongue as the woman approaches, her wariness almost palpable.

Reeling in her curiosity, Sheena nods and offers a friendly smile.

"Yes, it's me. I'm Sheena. Sheena Fujibayashi."

Padparadscha's eyes trail down to it briefly as well, but they can see themselves that it's intact. They can only wonder what kind of condition Faias must have been in for it to have flickered through forms in the way it had in that last dream.

"I would hope so," they say, tone still on the side of casual. There's no need to trouble the boy any further than they need to, but there are certain things that would be useful to know still. "How long was it you were gone?"

Whether it was the same for them is difficult to tell from the dreams alone, after all.

“What happened, Faias?” she asks gently, trying not to let her panic show. What she’d seen was real... but she doesn’t have the full picture. “Your aunt said it was just a routine patrol...”

She’s struggling with this. She wants answers, but she also doesn’t want to press too hard.

Konoe could feel someone approaching, though he didn't really pay much attention to that. He was too busy trying to get a hold of his empathy. However, his ears did prick up when she talked, and his eyes slid over to hers.

The was the female Two Cane he talked to on the magic box, wasn't it? He relaxed ever so slightly; she seemed a kind enough person. "I'm fine."

Konoe was forcing himself upwards; he couldn't just let his emotions have full reign over him like this.

He seemed beyond tired, not that she could blame him after what he must have seen. His scent wasn't strange for a mechanic, but there were some she didn't recognize, tart and bitter to her senses, ones tinged with an edge she couldn't name.

"I know some of the island," she replied, unwilling to bring up anything that might send Nerrin into a state that would cause her dismissal, "Where do you think you were?"

His perception might be just as important as the truth, whatever the truth actually was.

"Yes, Leo, look, look with your special eyes," Miles said. He wasn't going to deny that he was a fool, but at least he wasn't going to make the same mistakes twice. Probably.

But then Leo coughed, stood, and warned them to stay back, and Miles took a step back, his skin prickling. "What happened? Are you okay?"
redlightgreenlight: (skeptical)

[personal profile] redlightgreenlight 2018-07-18 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she'd told him not to touch. Valdis stepped past Miles, ignoring Leo's request, looking him over briefly with something like concern in her eyes. She didn't reach out to touch him, she had enough sense to not spread whatever was happening.

"Here," she said, pulling a canister of water off her hip, and opening it, "Hold out your hand. Fungus generally have some sort of spores. It might help to rinse them off."

Hopefully he hadn't inhaled too much.

Leo would probably question how he could rinse the spores out of his nose, but he just waved his hand aimlessly. "I think I'm high again...."

There was probably a joke to be made but instead, he just heavily leaned against the wall of the ship, sliding down until he was just a pile on the floor. "I don't think I can see properly, so you gotta stay away."

[personal profile] upshore 2018-07-18 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"What happens when you can't see properly?" Miles said, still wary. He didn't want to get close to the fungus if it was making Leo hallucinate. Last time he'd hallucinated, it hadn't ended well, to say the least. He still felt bad, even though Pepper had waved the whole incident off.

The fog had followed them here. Like Al'amar, Devin had a gut feeling that it masked the truth rather than being the problem itself. He tries not to do more than glance at Al'amar's missing hand.

"Do you know how you made it back here?" This is, Devin thinks, more important than how they vanished. And, since there are two of them, they might be able to piece their own story together better than separated, given how disoriented everyone must be.

[personal profile] redlightgreenlight 2018-07-18 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Your hand, Leo," Valdis clarified, "To rinse the spores off your hand. Once this passes you don't want to reinfect yourself or one of us."

She was less concerned about the impact to herself, she'd survive more easily than Miles or Leo and she definitely didn't want Miles anywhere near a hallucinogen. But she didn't move any closer, suddenly wary of how anything here might be able to affect her. If the crew had interacted with the Death Plane, then even she might be susceptible.

"Did anyone ever teach you two caution?"

Sorry Valdis, he wasn't really going to answer. The room was spinning much mroe than usual, and he was seeing things out of the corner of his eye-not normal things. It was taking all of his self control not to go completely insane and take over everyone's eyes in a 20 meter radius; even then, Miles and Valdis would be getting flashes of blue in their vision.

"I can see into the ground," Leo mumbled to absolutely no one, now curling himself into a small pain ball. The headache was forming.
upshore: (Oh fuck // lulamae)

[personal profile] upshore 2018-07-18 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I learned it the hard way," Miles said, wiggling his eight-and-a-half fingers at Valdis, before blinking repeatedly. That blue flash wasn't something he wanted, at all. He stepped back further from the fungus, wondering if it was just the spores, or if it was Leo.

"Are you okay?"

...Printing press?

He gives his yimo a confused look, then shrugs. He can try taking pictures for now and figure it out later.

As he continues moving forward, he glances at the carcass again, and looks away just as quickly. "In my visions...there were things that attacked. Maybe it was that." But really, he'd wanted to find out what happened to the ship. "Oily shadows...did you see anything like that?"

[personal profile] eyeinfusion 2018-07-18 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... He relaxes a little at that. It's not like he thought he was seeing Nerrin's past-past, especially given the timeframe Tiaghae had said, but the recognition had rattled him slightly. And at the very least, Nerrin doesn't seem to have reacted negatively to whatever he saw.

"Because you were seeing the place you grew up?" Which may be presumptuous of Judai to say—he doesn't know whether Nerrin grew up here or not. But if he saw Aifaran through the Dreamfolk, then that might have been comforting. ...Probably.

"Must have been rough..."

The first flash of blue had Valdis moving away from Leo, searching for a safe distance. She retreated into the next room, loathe to leave Leo behind, but still concerned about the powers at play.

"Miles," she said sharply, "Move away for now. You don't have to go far, just until the blue vanishes."

Alice was very quiet as she sifted through a shabby desk, feeling around the drawers for any catch to a secret compartment.

"...Something like that," she finally said, giving the desk a disappointed look.

"Something was in our minds," she said. "Or linking them. I've had quite enough of people fishing around in my brain. Can you help me move this?"

She gestured to the desk. She wasn't weak, but her strength was that of an average human and the desk was big, bulky and solid wood.

"A familiar sort of 'fine'," she remarked. How many times had her vision been swimming and she insisted it was 'fine'? Too many to count. 'Fine' never meant what it was supposed to.

"Seems quite a few have snuck aboard. Are you looking for answers as well?"
