Beyond the acrid scent, there's an oily residue on the floor that seems to be some kind of grease. If they inspect the engine machinery, they will find that there is more machinery built from whatever the crew could salvage tacked on. It's hard to tell what it's for, but there is a peculiar stone set in it.
The stone is cubical and smooth and a deep shade of obsidian. It's hard to tell in the gloom of the ship but examining it in better lit conditions, it will seem to actively repel light. There is no shine or gloss to it's smooth surface, despite feeling well polished. When touched by organic skin, it will give off a strange hum, though it will leave rashes.
