After a shouting match with one of their gaolers that had lasted nearly an hour (interspersed with phrases like 'you can't hide the truth forever!' and that sort of thing), Alice was huddled sullenly on the cot. It wasn't the first time she'd been tossed in a cell - she'd woken up in one nearly every time she blacked out.
Tsk tsk tsk. A menace to herself but no danger to others. She don't belong in gaol.
The copper's words echoed in her memory as she toed a pebble over the floor, it's clattering echoing much too loudly for such a small noise.
"They were flooded," she said slowly, because whatever else, Alice kept her bargains (save for when she didn't) and it wasn't the Fool's fault they were in this mess.
"Not... properly. Just all full of water, from floor to ceiling. You'd think it would soak through or come out the cracks in the windows and doors but... it was still. Even when I opened the door, it was just... still. Like it was suspended in amber."
