[EVENT] STORM-TOSSED SICKNESS

Characters: All
Date: March 22-31, 2019
Location: Around Aifaran
Situation: The surviving crew of the Narrakra is suffering from strange symptoms, and behaving oddly as a result. The two mysterious ships in the harbor begin to behave strangely as well...
Warnings/Rating: Add in headers as needed

The crewmembers of the Narrakra who had returned are beginning to act oddly. Nerrin faints in public; Faias expresses disorientation frequently and holes up at home. Eitria mentions feeling odd and uncomfortable after that strange arson last month, and has gone to the Aisling Tower to confer with the researchers. Melias, too, has gone to the Tower, clearly interested in learning whatever she can about the Narrakra incident, and why the returning crew members have fallen ill so suddenly.

I. DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS

Some time around the beginning of the year, and with as little fanfare as possible, the crew of the Narrakra were all released from quarantine and back to their families. With the chaos of the storm, they had the opportunity to re-integrate largely in private. By March, it's possible to see them out and about. The later into the month, the more likely they are to be alone; usually they seem to be walking, or checking out market stalls, with no particular purpose in evidence. If approached, they're only willing to exchange small talk and nothing more, disengaging as soon as an opportunity presents itself.

In addition to the four individuals who became known to the Dreamfolk in visions (Eitria, Nerrin, Al'amar, and Faias), another thirty-six people belonged to the crew of the Narrakra. As they don't venture out in uniform, it will be more difficult to identify them unless one keenly observed the ship's return last summer. In late March, the entire crew abruptly becomes ill. The symptoms range from flu-like to magical in nature, with little consistency. More than a few of them report the appearance of a blue mark somewhere on their body.

At the end of the month, the crew is ordered to either remain at home or are being tended to at the Aisling Tower with oversight from expert physicians. Two individuals, Zlatan and Shusa, are among those sequestered at home and they are apparently not planning on remaining there in silence like their time in quarantine. They make regular posts to the network - nothing significant, no real useful information made public, but they're ensuring that eyes are on them again.

But the crew of the Narrakra are not the only ones who experience some effects of this strange illness, if indeed it is an illness proper. A number of people who live near the shoreline become sick, although their symptoms seem to be exclusively mundane - it's possible that there's simply a flu outbreak, but with the range of symptoms so wide, extra care is taken to figure out what is going on.

Additionally, any Dreamfolk that experienced an eddy effect during Xi Tianlong well have a resurgence of symptoms from the eddy from time to time. Fortunately, the strength of these symptoms are significantly diminished and only last for about an hour at a time. The observant among the Dreamfolk will note, however, that the azure portion of their tattoo (which appeared after going through an eddy) has expanded by at least a few millimeters branching out like roots. A relapse in symptoms is more likely around the lightning trees; no other clear pattern has emerged yet.

II. WHAT BROUGHT THEY FROM THE FOUNDERED LAND, OVER THE FLOWING SEA?

The two ships that accompanied Melias to Aifaran have remained largely inert in the harbor, unless they are prodded first. Around the same time that the former crew of the Narrakra fall ill, however, the two ships have something of a mood shift, if one can ascribe moods to a ship at all. Where before they seem to move and undulate with unseen waves, now they go still. Even days with brisker winds do not seem to push them from their location, unanchored and yet rooted in place where they flank Melias' ship.

This unnatural stillness continues for a few days. On the morning of the 27th, the sun rises on the ships in the same spot, but with obvious and unsettling changes in evidence. From the deck of one ship an eight-foot tall archway has emerged seamlessly. At a glance, the arch appears to be made of the same cream-colored material as the rest of the ship, but at certain angles it may appear veined with white. The effect is more like that of polished marble than solid wood, although no one is able to get close enough by subterfuge to observe in any detail. The second ship also has an archway, smaller and incomplete at the very top. In front of it, a raised elliptical platform has emerged. Two columns, about four feet tall and a foot in diameter, stand at each end of the platform. The ships will continue to gently remove intruders, albeit with a sense of less amusement and more resignation.

For a time, Melias is difficult to track down in person; she stays at the Aisling Tower almost exclusively after the crew becomes ill as far as anyone can tell, though she keeps up written and network communications.

As the month progresses, those who work in the harbor and scientists studying Shuyul Bay during recovery are delighted to note that the coral reef which died around the time of the Tall Man sighting have begun to show signs of life again. Several Erol'a have remarked that there are old species of coral making a resurgence - coral that hasn't been around since the time of Tu Vishan.
