"From my experience," Nita says, "Free will's the best thing we've got. And each other."

There's no bite in the words - just a bit of hesitance as to how Kit would take them.

Kit shoots her a sideways glance, but tempers it, turning to examine his cigarette instead. She's just a kid, he reminds himself--and a kid not from his world.

"We can control how we feel about something, and some of what we do about it," he says slowly instead, takes a pull from the cigarette, then breathes it out again. "More than that? I'm not so sure."

"I know that much is true," she concurs, watching some of the smoke faze out over the Bay.

"Other people are out of the question... but that doesn't mean we can't communicate."
