Valdis stared at her cat in disbelief. The fact that he had figured out how to open the door explained how he kept getting out, but his intelligence had to be far more accidental than anything else, right?

"He was blessed by an archangel," she explained, "I'm sure the heightened intelligence must be a side effect."

She had no reason to send him away, or be hostile, but she wasn't entirely sure why he had seen fit to visit.
