"They're scholars," she says, as if that explains everything.

To her it does, anyway. Maybe scholars in his world have a bit more sense. "They're people who always wanted to know everything, and are getting the opportunity," she clarifies. "If it wasn't my job to look after them, I couldn't blame them for it." But she can, and she does, because they should know better.
