This is the most nefarious dock I've ever been on!

Characters: Gene Khan, Miles Upshur, Aly Haskell, and y'all
Date: throughout August
Location: Aifaran and environs
Situation: hooliganry
Warnings/Rating: Will be added as they arise
[A] | Gene | throughout Aifaran | throughout August | open
At least he's living on his own.

That alone has put Gene in a better mood, since he'd been living with Bakura and Pepper. He's wandering around stores, making his face known again, and getting furniture. Not a lot of furniture, mind you, but he's getting furniture.

And now he's haggling. Not that he minds haggling, because he's used to it (life in Hong Kong, life in Keeliai...it had always been odd to him that the West didn't engage in haggling, which was almost a good-natured game of wits). But this Arybar is being quite persistent about how many rhinn she wants for this futon, which is really not worth three cobalts.

"I'll give you two at best," Gene says. "Three cobalts is highway robbery."

"Two and four crescents," the merchant says.

"Two and two, and that's me being generous."

[B] | Gene | Gene's apartment | August 11 | closed to Pepper
The apartment is sparse, even Spartan. Gene doesn't have much, these days, since he hadn't been able to bring much from Keeliai, and he hadn't been accumulating much in the way of possessions here anyway. He doesn't attach much value to physical objects. He never has.

There's two rooms, a joint living room/kitchen and a bedroom, and the furniture is as basic as it can be. A table; two chairs; a futon in a couch configuration. In the bedroom, there's a dresser - and the only concession to Gene's broken and never-healing heart - and the hope he'll never admit to - is a bed big enough for two.

When Pepper comes to visit, he answers the door, looking tired but smiling anyway. "Hey, Pepper."

[C] | Miles | throughout Aifaran | early August | open
That blanket video has given Miles a little bit of fame in the way that Vine stars get a little bit of fame; he's at least recognized in public sometimes, which makes him laugh, but he won't do the dance, claiming that it's not the same without the blanket suit, because really, it isn't.

The whole Narrakra thing had thrown off his Hyperion investigation, so he's back to that. Look out for a guy with a camera, he's liable not to notice you. But feel free to tease him about the blanket dance, especially if he bumps into you. His situational awareness is a bit limited to his camera's FOV when he's filming.

[D] | Miles | Valdis' place | backdated to just after the Narrakra incident | closed to Valdis
Miles Upshur is not the kind of person to accept that there are things he just can't understand. He'll work himself to the bone and crack his head open and give himself a coffee IV to understand what he needs to. Which is why he's knocked on the door to Valdis' place and folded his arms, waiting for her to answer, an annoyed look on his face.

The Narrakra incident, as he'd decided to term it in his mind, had pissed him off him as much as it had horrified him, because Valdis and Leo had seen something, and being unable to see magic and other related woo stuff, he hadn't. That got under his skin in a way he'd never thought possible; even his Talent didn't let him do that kind of magic, whatever it was. Restoration, or some shit. He hadn't gone into details, because he'd never cared. Now he was annoyed enough to try and find out.

[E] | Aly | a park | throughout August | open
Aly's a little twitchy about her and Rutile's whole BarrierQuest thing. The little voice in her head - the part that's Aliya Marie Haskell, not the Flame, not Keahi, not the weird amalgamation of all three she's seemed to become while she's here - is telling her that this is an extremely terrible idea, but the rest of her is ignoring it. She needs to know. Sure, she's been told that it's 'protecting' them, but she's also used to lies. People lie all the time. Spirits lie. And they sure as hell haven't been protected from the Shunts, or whatever on the planes happened to the Narrakra. That had been outside the barrier, sure, but when it came back, why didn't the barrier do something about it?

Part of her - that small voice again, the one that was concerned and not angry - knew that this was selfish and wanted her to stop. But she knew that she wouldn't. If she messed with the barrier, maybe it would do something to send her home. She had stuff to do. Important stuff. Like an assasination.

In order to distract herself, she's taken to doodling sigils again, sitting in a park. Not on a bench, but under a few trees. It's nice to be close to the ground and leaning against a tree, even if it's not her kind of tree. The bark isn't dark enough to be almost black and the leaves are deep green and not the blood-red she's used to, and it's sunny out and not the eternal twilight that makes her feel like she's home.

A tear drips onto her sketchbook. She pretends not to notice.

While getting his own place is definitely a thing that will be good for Gene in the long run, Pepper can't help but hover just a little bit. Fortunately, this can be moderately well disguised by using this as an opportunity to engage in yet more interior decorating (or at least offer her Expert Opinion on things for the fun of it).

When Gene opens the door, Pepper has a basket on her arm full of treats as well as a few more useful items: nice candles, incense, and a box of spices. The basket sports a ridiculously large ribbon. "Hey!" She grins and holds up her spoils. "I brought you a 'welcome home' present. I thought about sneaking balloons in," she continues, slipping past him to deposit the basket on the table, "but I'm trying this new thing called 'subtlety'. How're you liking the new place?"

It's hard without Tony, Pepper knows that goes without saying. There's no need to draw attention to his absence any more than his absence already does.

The hug is returned tightly, in classic Pepper fashion. She's glad that hugs are a thing that's becoming normal for Gene; not so long ago, it was still Very Weird for him. "I figured I should let you decide your own interior decorating and go for snacks and spices instead," she replies with a tiny hint of slyness.

His assessment of the apartment alleviates some of her worry, though not all of it. At least he's in about as good a mood as can be expected, and willing to see a future here. "You've always been one of the best cooks I know. I'm definitely invading regularly to sample whatever latest concoction you're coming up with, you are warned," Pepper jokes - but she'll definitely be insisting on regular lunches and dinners at each other's respective homes. "Have you met any of the neighbors or is that on a later to-do list?"

Pepper holds her hands up, grinning. "You caught me. There's a bunch of new things to try in Aifaran and I'd rather let you experiment first. I volunteer as guinea pig." Not that Bakura wasn't a good cook, either, nor incapable of improvising (and she was halfway decent herself), but Gene probably could work in a restaurant if he were so inclined.

She is absolutely thrilled to hear that Gene isn't living entirely like a hermit here. "That's still awesome," she remarks, clearly proud. "Do you think you'll do a little bit of an open house kind of thing? I know you're not a big fan of parties, but it could make it easier to get to know people than going like, door to door."
