Do you have a Betamax player?
Characters: Gene Khan, Miles Upshur, Aly Haskell, Kai, and y'all
Date: throughout September
Location: Aifaran and environs
Situation: general nonsense
Warnings/Rating: Will be added as they arise
[A] | Gene | throughout Aifaran | throughout September | open
If Gene had been in a slightly better mood before, he's downright sunny now. Your boyfriend returning from the Dreaming will do that to you, especially when you've been terrified that a. he'll never come back, and b. if he does come back, he won't remember anything. The second would have been much worse than the first.
Neither of those things had come to pass, however, and Gene's almost ready to start his new business. Next month should do the trick, so in the meantime he's purchasing sparring equipment and practice swords. He's even practicing forms in a park. In public.
[B] | Gene | the Shunt | backdated to August 27 | closed to Tony
It's been another long day of investigation. Gene has thrown himself into this, because it helps take his mind off of things. The dojo has taken the back burner, and the mysterious chunk of Dreaming has captured his attention fully.
The weather's been hot and muggy, as usual, and he takes a long drink of water from his canteen. He's pretty sure he's sweated out half his body weight today. A flash of red and gold catches his eye, and he turns so quickly that water slops out of his canteen onto his shirt.
"Tony?"
("And what am I, chopped swim bladder?" the Inkling with him grumbles.)
[C] | Miles | throughout Aifaran | early September | open
That blanket video has given Miles a little bit of fame in the way that Vine stars get a little bit of fame; he's at least recognized in public sometimes, which makes him laugh, but he won't do the dance, claiming that it's not the same without the blanket suit, because really, it isn't.
The whole Narrakra thing had thrown off his investigations, so he's back to that. Look out for a guy with a camera, he's liable not to notice you. But feel free to tease him about the blanket dance, especially if he bumps into you. His situational awareness is a bit limited to his camera's FOV when he's filming.
He can also be found in the library, poring over information, anything that might illuminate what Valdis had shared with him. If glanced over, the books are about the history of various religions in Aifaran and their traditions.
[D] | Aly | the middle of a street | early September | closed to Devin
Aly's not exactly mad that Devin kept this thing with the Fool from her. But she is curious, and curiosity and stubbornness make for a very, very dangerous combination.
Because she knows that he'll avoid her if he has even the slightest idea that she's got this in her head, she's been taking the high road - that is, she's returned to her habit of running the roofs. When she gets close enough, she lets her eyes go hooded and looks at him, and there it is - a line that doesn't fade away like all the rest of his, but stretches out into Aifaran itself. Bingo.
You've got a lot of 'splainin' to do, mister.
And such it is that she leaps down from a roof in front of him - outside of striking distance, but there all the same.
"Hello, Devin," she says with a cheerful smile.
[E] | Kai | throughout Aifaran | early September | open
If Kai wasn't a Dreamfolk, she'd look like a tourist. She does anyway. The city's strange, mostly due to the presence of so many vertebrates and such a weird mix of cultures! It's pretty weird for someone who's been confined to Inkling culture for almost her entire life, with only a smattering of Octoling culture - and that only recently with the wave of Octolings escaping the underground.
She's wandering around, looking up at everything, and of course trying every single piece of food that she possibly can.
"Okay," she says eagerly to a giggling kedan, "so what's a sea prune?"

A
The small crowd which had formed in the park drew her attention, but it was the sight of Gene practicing that drew a smile. She was supposed to meet X later, so she had the two practice swords with her, giving her an idea.
"Think fast," she called, tossing one toward him.
D
And that greeting feels strangely pointed.
He arches an eyebrow. "Aly." The roofline gets a glance. "To what do I owe the honor of your descent?"
no subject
He turned towards her properly and lowered the practice sword. "To what do I owe the honor of you lobbing a sword at me?"
no subject
"Just thought we should catch up. Seems like you've been avoiding me, Gerard. Which is dreadfully rude of you." She tucks her thumbs into her belt. "I'd be blowing up your yimo, but that's annoying, and I much prefer to...drop in...anyway. Physical activity's better for you. Plus, it's easier to ignore messages, innit?"
no subject
"It's been awhile since I practiced with someone who could keep up with me," Valdis continued. As in forms, not necessarily speed, though if he could match that, he'd probably be the most powerful individual here.
E
Though, perhaps they shouldn't expect any better from... whatever Kai is. She seems young, to say the least.
no subject
"I've been avoiding everyone, Aly, not you specifically," he points out, hands on his hips. "And you should not be even remotely surprised that I'm rude. It's my default state. Care to try that again?"
no subject
Did she just threaten to set him on fire if he runs away? Yes she did.
"C'mon. Let's get lunch. I have...questions...for you."
no subject
"And I'm a little out of practice with other people, I admit. But you know what they say about riding bikes." He rolled his shoulders. "When we're done, I've got a question for you."
no subject
"What if we fry it first?" Frying fixes everything.
no subject
"Muscle memory is fairly strong," she quipped, moving the sword into position, "A question? Color me intrigued."
She smiled and decided to make the first move, darting into his space and swinging down toward his left thigh.
B
So it is quite a relief, for a variety of reasons (only some of which are cheeseburger-related) when he spots a familiar figure across an overgrown courtyard.
'Tony?' Gene says incredulously, turning towards Tony as the sunlight glints off his armor.
"Gene!" Tony grins and dismisses the armor, and trots over to him. "Man, I hope you know the way out of here. We've been stuck here all morning, and I'm starving."
...so "ghost towns" came on when i was writing this tag and i'm trying not to cry
"Yeah, I know the way," he says, his eyes fixed on Tony. "What...do you remember?" He's hesitant, because if Tony doesn't remember his time in Konryu, he's going to have to live with that, and a heart even more broken than before. It wouldn't be the first time life had kicked him while he was down. Not even close.
no subject
"How do you feel about starting the dojo back up?"
no subject
"You can do whatever you like," she quipped, "Or...do you mean as partners?"
They had been partners before, back when Bakura ran the Dojo, but they'd only dealt with classes, not the logistics. Still, it wasn't as if they couldn't handle those parts, and she did miss teaching. She'd juggled teaching with the Police force before, she could easily do it again.
no subject
"After all, it would be rude to do otherwise."
no subject
Valdis had always liked the Dojo, it had been the first place where she could see the good she was capable of.
i love this whole "casual danger dialogue" they have going
Satanhellhound. Gene sidestepped the blow. "Excellent. Part-time, then? After all," he said, trying to trap her sword beneath his, "I wouldn't want to deprive the Sentry."Although if she really wasn't that happy, maybe she'd quit.
It's just their style
"I can do part-time," She swept her blade away by drawing on her natural speed, counter striking just as sharply, though she pulled the slash at the last moment, slowing her movement.
it's canon that he can do this and i hate it lmao
"Of course, you shouldn't cheat while working with the students." He flashed a grin at her and decided to show off some of his own skill. He flipped over her, outside of upward striking range, and swung for her ankles from behind.
They are both just showing off now
hey, give the audience a show, right?
no subject
Because the latter didn't need any thought.
no subject
"When do you not?" he mutters audibly, and gestures down the street towards a cafe.
It's a little after the lunch rush, so finding a table for two isn't terribly difficult. Since Aly is the one who wants to talk and is threatening him if he doesn't concede, Devin does not prompt conversation while he glances over the menu.
oh fuck
Dread starts to wriggle uncomfortably in Tony's stomach. It can't be that bad, he tells himself – Gene doesn't look any different. Doesn't look older.
"How long have I been gone?"
no subject
When they sit down, Aly surveys him over the top of her menu for a moment, before saying with infuriating calm, "You're making friends. That's good. I worry about you."
She's building up to something. You cannot escape, Devin. You are already trapped.
Sometimes My Playlists Are Bad
It's really him, he's here, and he remembers. Gene never thought he'd be so lucky. He'd never even dreamed it.
Gene took a step closer, and then another step, and then hugged Tony as hard as he could.
