'Cause fear don't haunt the madness | November Catch-all

Characters: Pepper Potts, Devin Parker, and you!
Date: Throughout November
Location: All over the city
Situation: Pepper is shopping and making friends with moth swarms, and Devin is having criminal trouble.
Warnings/Rating: In headers as needed

A. [Pepper] Commerce 4 | Open

Having recently made a new friend in Kai and slowly but surely increasing the gaggle of people interested in shopping, Pepper goes to check out a few new markets that she hasn't explored yet. Honestly, she wasn't planning on buying anything today (although realistically she'd probably come home with something, even if it was just a treat for her and Bakura, or for Gene and Tony), but then she finds out there's a tax holiday. Apparently, some of the merchants are taking advantage of this to also have small sales and boost traffic even further.

"Time to do some gift shopping," she declares with a grin, chatting up one of the artisans. "Do you know if Christmas is even a thing here? Tropical islands don't really do winter, do they."

B. [Pepper] Meta 3 | Open

With beach weather being practically year-round, Pepper really should make an effort to spend time by the ocean more. After a busy day of work, she's allowed to leave the Sentry a little early and swings by one of the small beaches not far from the townhouse. The sun is starting to go down and as the light fades there are suddenly a lot of moth-firefly things appearing in her face. Like a lot. At least they're pretty and none of them take nibble when they happen to land on her.

"Okay, seriously guys, what's the deal," she asks the insects, laughing.

C. [Devin] Arts 3 | Valdis | Mid-November

On his way to work, someone brushed past Devin in the street and for a moment he thought he was getting pickpocketed again. The vampire was about to grab the thief when he realized it was the reverse - something had been dropped into his pocket. A rather ugly piece of art, if it could be called that, and not one he was familiar with. Shrugging, he put it away and did a little research once he reached the library, only to discover that he was in the possession of poorly-made satirical contraband. Great.

As soon as his shift was over, Devin headed to see Valdis and turn the item over. He requested her specifically and was told to wait in the lobby. He sat and immediately took up the affectation of extreme boredom, just in case anyone thought his presence suspicious.

D. [Devin] Crime 1 | The Fool | Mid-November

Devin usually spends more nights at the Fool's apartment than his own on any given week, and apparently someone has noticed. He steps outside one morning to run an errand only to find that someone has dumped fish chum on the cafe doorstep. This wouldn't ping anything of interest except for the fact that more fish guts are thrown at his head a moment later. The vampire dodges instinctively, saving his clothing from from being ruined, but the culprit evades him. Too many people, too many shapeshifters, and in any case he's more concerned by the fact that he's being targeted here of all places.

He heads back upstairs immediately, looking appropriately harassed. "I am finding myself considerably glad that you work with a brick wall of a man," he grumbles. "I cannot wait for these protests to be over."

E. [Devin] Die Rosa Tulpe | Yuuko/Open

Although it would be inaccurate to say Devin has practically moved into the Fool's apartment, he does frequent Klaus' cafe most days. At least some of the time, Devin purchases a drink rather than just lingering. It would be rude, for one, and Klaus also has the most consistent source of Earth-brand coffee in the city and knows how to brew a proper cup of tea. That's worth savoring over a good book every once in a while. An added (and unintentional) bonus: this gives him something else to say if anyone asks why he's spending a lot of time here.

F. [Devin] X's medical facility | Early November | Zephyr

When Devin learned that X had fallen into a coma, he was equally concerned and at a loss of what to do. Obviously, X in a coma is not a good thing. What caused it and what might happen when he wakes are questions that Devin doesn't have an answer for, although he has some theories. Probably it has nothing to do with X reading Valdis or Devin, but the thought is there however illogical it is. If only to get more information from the medical staff, Devin goes to visit the reader on one of his days off.

Much to his chagrin, X has another visitor. The staff member who takes him to X seems very happy that the reader has so many friends and tells him to take his time. Devin occupies the threshold to X's room and steps no further.

"Still on guard duty, I see."

Upon his return to the apartment, Devin will find the Fool as he often is at this hour of the morning: sitting placidly by the window in his bedroom, enjoying a fragrant cup of tea while absently scratching the underside of his peculiar bat-kitten's chin. He glances towards the door as Devin steps through it with a smile, pleased in a lazy, cat-like sort of way that his lover has apparently chosen to forego errands in favour of spending time with him, only to blink quizzically at his expression.

"Protests?" he inquires, then gathers up his little companion and places her upon his shoulder as he rises to his feet and steps towards Devin. He looks him over, concerned. "Has something happened?"

It is hard to remain completely irritated with a sight like that. He really needs to bring Luthien over one of these days to meet the new arrival.

"Someone left a pile of chum on the cafe's doorstep, and threw more at me when I walked out," Devin explains, sighing. "I avoided it, obviously, but I have no blessed clue why they're targeting me for." A worried grimace crosses his features. "Hopefully they'll keep it to throwing fish viscera, since they've decided this is where to find me."

Meaning they can find the Fool, too.

...Ah. With a slight furrow of his brow, the Fool neatly parses Devin's meaning, and sighs.

"Someone has noticed your particular comings and goings, it seems." He reaches out to take hold of his hand so as to lead him back to the plush-looking chaise lounge beside the window, coaxing him down onto it with a gently admonishing look should he put up too much of a fuss.

"I shall speak with Klaus about it later today, in that case," he goes on; he is momentarily delayed from taking his seat beside Devin in order to lift Holly from his shoulder. With a little flap of her wings, she leaps from his palm to the back of the lounge, where she finds a sunny patch to curl up in and warm herself. That seen to, the Fool sits and reclaims his cup of tea, then turns his attention back to Devin. He considers his words carefully a moment, before speaking again. "Though it might be easier to discuss the topic with him if I could provide him some detail...?" There he lets his words taper off into a question, with raised eyebrows. Translation: how much longer are they going to keep this a secret from the entire world?

Devin allows himself to be led without much of a struggle, seeing as he has no objections to being drawn closer to the Fool. He does hope that finding comfort here won't mean real trouble in the future or they may have to make some hard decisions.

The Fool's implication is clear, and Devin sighs quietly. He would be lying if he said he is totally comfortable with the idea of their relationship being public knowledge, but it is an inevitability. At least a small handful of people are already aware. And it's not as though they have to shout it from the rooftops. They simply won't have to restrain themselves until they're alone, and that does have significant appeal.

"Klaus is a smart man, and a discreet one. I wouldn't be surprised if he already knows," Devin says with what might be amused resignation. He is sleeping here a lot, that probably hasn't escaped Klaus' notice. "I'll admit this incident doesn't exactly ease my mind about being more open with people we know, but conversely it's happened even when most still don't," he allows, running a hand through his hair. "And generally speaking I don't try to attract this kind of attention."

He is really trying to logic his way through this.

While watching Devin twist himself up in knots over this subject isn't something that the Fool necessarily enjoys, he nevertheless ends up semi-reclined against the side of the chaise with an absent smile tugging up the corners of his mouth. He lifts his teacup to his lips and peers beyond the rim of it at Devin with a spark of something a little sly in his gaze.

"I do enjoy watching your calisthenics of the mind," he observes blithely. "It looks exhausting." Sip.

...then, lest Devin believe the Fool isn't hearing him, he reaches out to rest a hand against his knee, his gaze gentling. "I don't imagine that all of our mutual acquaintances will be thrilled by this development," he admits, thinking rather pointedly of Trahearne (though he does not mention the Sylvari's name aloud). He considers his next words carefully, before meeting Devin's eyes again. "I have kept many secrets in my life, and doubtless will keep many more--but I would prefer that what you and I share not be one of them. Not for longer than necessary."

He reaches for Devin's hand, grasps it gently, and laces their fingers together. "I am not ashamed to be seen with you."

Overthinking things is one of his specialties. What the Fool says next is too important to respond with a sly quip, and Devin has been trying to get out of his habit of deflecting when he's around his lover anyway.

"Nor am I," he says, probably needlessly. Devin considers himself incredibly fortunate that the Fool wants him; his desire to conceal their relationship is rooted in other fears, and in a generally private lifestyle. Granted, being exposed to the judgement of their acquaintances is not a thrilling prospect but he has thick skin. Hopefully, he can extend it into this area of his life.

"Alright," Devin concedes with a wan smile, brushing his thumb over the Fool's knuckles. "I suppose there is something to be said for safety in numbers, in any case." Perhaps the Fool's friends will consider keeping him happy a greater priority than nailing Devin to a wall for bringing trouble and fish entrails to his doorstep. His lover will assuredly use that clever tongue of his on them, if necessary.

He lowers his eyes to where their hands are joined. "Letting people see this-- us will take some getting used to," Devin amends. He does his best not to grimace, and sighs at himself. "For a few reasons. I'll try not to seem too... distant, in public," he promises quietly.

Whatever his friends' opinions of their relationship may be, the Fool will indeed be glad to inform them of just how much--or how little--their opinions matter. Which is to say very little, although he can come up with many creative ways to communicate that point.

"I'll try not to seem too... distant, in public."

"I will not be bothered, if you are," the Fool tells him mildly, while shifting nearer to Devin on the chaise lounge. He winds a slender arm around his shoulders and lets his hand card gently through the hair at the nape of his neck; it is soft, and dark, and wonderful under his fingertips. He smiles almost secretively before admitting, "I rather like knowing that this side of you is reserved for me."
