Situation: A large influx of Dreamfolk arrive in time for one of the Lunar Festivals, and they're all invited!

A surprising amount of Dreamfolk have arrived within a short time frame - a peculiarity remarked upon by a number of Aifaran's residents. It is unusual in that it coincides with a lunar festival, one which only happens every fifty or so years.

Newcomers will find the streets packed with all sorts of people, stalls of fried and sugared foods, carnivalesque games and rides, and all other manner of things to do. Merchants are very keen to get their wares out there, and the stipend given may just burn a hole in your pocket when you see what's for sale.

[The fact that he doesn't specify what he's talking about means Padparadscha can't actually tell, since to them, there's nothing visible that should hurt. Then again, it generally takes quite a bit to hurt someone of their species.]

You'll have to be more specific, little one. [Their tone is faintly amused, but they do seem interested in what he means nonetheless, leaning against the door for the moment rather than opening it.]

If it doesn’t, then everything is fine. [He’s only familiar with humans and Roidmude, but from observing both, he knows how strongly personal eccentricities can surface. In other words, he’s realized how rude his question might have been. One of his old friends would get angry at him for less.]

[His eyes drift to the room number plate.]

You are in number 4. [Which has no bearing on anything, presently, but this situation he’s found himself in—arriving here—is different enough from what he’s used to that he has to ground himself a little.]

[corundrum]

[That makes Padparadscha laugh softly, then shrug. They do have some idea what he meant, since it's not as if it's normal even among gems, but it's also not something they feel the need to burden anyone with if they can help it.]

So I am. And you're looking for a number yourself? [It seems unusual that he'd be here otherwise, since they all just arrived. Getting a sense of what their situation is will likely be the course of action most of them gravitate to.]

Yes. I was on my way.

[He crosses his arms and paces a few steps further along.]

Having us all in one place. It's convenient. [A headquarters that they didn't choose. Of course, that's contingent on all the newcomers being a group, and that's not something they can boast. (Hotels, how do they work)]

[He holds up the handset he was given along with his room number.] Did you receive this, too?

[corundrum]

It seems as if they're used to these kinds of arrivals, to have a base already established. [And information already centralised, equipment ready to be handed out...there's a lot that says they have the freedom to have made this convenient.

Padparadscha blinks for a moment at the device before humming and pulling their own out of their back pocket, turning it in their hands.] This odd thing? I did. They explained how it worked, but I think I'll need to play around a bit to really understand it.

[Having grown accustomed to new arrivals would explain it.]

[Chase frowns as he brings the handset back into his sight to look at it; there's something about it that bothers him, but he can't put his finger on why. So he just puts it back into his pocket.] So we're all given one. [It seems slightly generous to him, but he also doesn't have the measure of this world yet.]

Why do you suppose they call us "Dreamfolk?"

[corundrum]

Looks like it. [Padparadscha puts theirs away again, motions rather careful. Whatever the screen is made of, they doubt it's designed to withstand insistent motions from anything made of rock.

That is a more interesting question, though, and Padparadscha stretches a little with a long hum, as if thinking it over.] Well, who knows? Maybe we come from worlds they can only dream of. Or maybe they think we're brought here by dreams somehow.

[...That sounded like joke. Was that a joke? Chase is quiet a moment, looking vaguely puzzled, before deciding that, if Padparadscha has acted more or less like the people he’s known, then that thing that sounds like a joke his friends would have made is probably a joke.]

I do not think so. [His conclusion didn’t prevent him from acting like a killjoy, but hey, he’s learning.]

We come from different worlds. There is no reason to classify us together.

[The fact that he might be slightly biased in that regard, having known only humans and Roidmude, who couldn’t help but fight each other, flies right over his head.]

[corundrum]

Isn't there? They can't know the details of every world we come from. [Even just in this small time, Padparadscha's seen a variety of different people, and chances are even the humans come from different origins.] Instead of trying to make impossibly tiny classifications for every single one of us that comes from a different world...why not make one, that covers everyone who comes here from another place?

[It makes enough sense to them, though something like that wouldn't be hard in their world considering the major species all live in different places anyway.]

[They've got him there. He spends a moment considering it.]

That seems...inefficient. [Inefficient to do what? He has no idea.]

Is that name acceptable to you?

[corundrum]

"Dreamfolk"? It's strange, but I don't have a problem with it. It's not even rude. [They laugh a little, but in the end, offer a slight shrug as they get a tiny bit more serious.]

It's not a name that means a lot to me, so I think it's fine for now.

[driverslicense]

[That's one way of looking at it... That names that don't mean anything to you shouldn't matter to you. Still, there's something he doesn't like about having a name that he doesn't understand. "Mashin," "Grim Reaper," "Kamen Rider"—those were all things that were self-evident.]

It's because it doesn't mean anything to me that it's bothersome.

[But with all this talk of names—] I'm Chase.

[corundrum]

I see. Maybe we just think about it differently, then. [It doesn't seem worth arguing over to Padparadscha, at least, so they shrug a little as they move on to introductions as well.]

Padparadscha. If you live on this side of the building as well, I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of each other, huh?

[driverslicense]

[Chase is used to thinking a bit differently from the people he's surrounded by, so that comment passes right by him.]

That is likely. [Theoretically possible, at least; he doesn't have to sleep in a bed, but he isn't not amendable to using it. It's good to know where he can find people, in any case.]

[Padparadscha might need to sleep, but it's possible to go without it for a little while as well, so they can see themselves not spending all that much time in these accommodations. Still, knowing who they're sharing barracks with is helpful.]

See you. Good luck finding your actual roommates, huh? [They still seem more amused about proceedings than anything, but they can't say they aren't curious about their own.]
