[EVENT] Moon and Mirrors (Welcome Mingle Log)

Situation: A large influx of Dreamfolk arrive in time for one of the Lunar Festivals, and they're all invited!

A surprising amount of Dreamfolk have arrived within a short time frame - a peculiarity remarked upon by a number of Aifaran's residents. It is unusual in that it coincides with a lunar festival, one which only happens every fifty or so years.

Newcomers will find the streets packed with all sorts of people, stalls of fried and sugared foods, carnivalesque games and rides, and all other manner of things to do. Merchants are very keen to get their wares out there, and the stipend given may just burn a hole in your pocket when you see what's for sale.

( She shakes her head simply at that. ) I don't think they would enjoy it.

( They squirm a bit when they're picked up. Doesn't that mean they dislike it? Sera doesn't know since she has no way to communicate with the creatures. )

You're here, but you don't want to pick one of them up. ( She hums thoughtfully for a second before pushing herself up to her feet. ) You're not here for them then?

[Chase doesn't know if they'd enjoy it, either, so he stays silent on that front.]

I was looking around. [Staying cooped up in a room didn't appeal to him. He'd be out and about even if there weren't a festival. As to why here, well...] You are also what they call a Dreamfolk.

That I am. ( She doesn't bother disguising that. Kind of hard to when she's chosen to sit here in clothing that doesn't fit in at all. )

Whatever that term means. I have yet to determine what it means other than a wayward traveler.

( An outsider. Generally someone who doesn't belong. )

I also haven't determined what it means.

[He'd gotten an idea, but he isn't entirely satisfied with it.]

[But he'd approached simply because he thought she might be one, and not to question her about it, so, after gazing at the bibirus, he leans over and picks one up.]

How do you...

[He trails off. He does not have the presence of mind currently to watch how other people are playing with bibirus...]

( The only idea she has is that it's a term coined to describe an outsider and therefore, it's a derogatory term no matter how dolled up it is. They are described as being apart from the natives of this land one way or the other. )

Pet them? ( Sera looks up, trying to determine what the question was since he had no intention of finishing it. ) I just hold out my hand and they bump into it with their faces.

( She really doesn't know herself. This is the first time she's ever been close to an animal like this... or any animal really. )

Their physiology seems to be in conflict with itself. They have wings, but they don't fly.

[But he is holding it with his hand.]

[...He holds out his other hand, but it doesn't seem inclined to bump into it.]

Many creatures have such contradictions. [He pauses a second.] Does it upset you?

Upset me? (She wasn't aware that she looked upset, her features scrunching up briefly in thought. It doesn't last for very long, the girl trying her best to smooth out her expression and not appear as perplexed as she had been.)

No, I don't think so.

(Watching him, she notices that it doesn't want to bump into his hand... that's a bit sad, she thinks.)

I think I'm more inclined to be upset at being swept away to a strange realm. Doesn't that upset you?

Not for long.

[He sets the bibiru back down.]

I have accomplished all I needed to. [Said what he needed to. It wouldn't have been the moment he would've chosen for himself, but he isn't unhappy with how things ended up in his world.]

I was deactivated for a while. This is much the same. [Not...really, but he has to start his comparison somewhere.]

You are homesick?

(That's odd terminology, but she just shakes her head.)

No, but there are things that need to be done back in my world. (Others might have referred to it as home, but she's just as detached to her realm as she is with this one.)

You have no prior obligations to return to. It must be a nice feeling to be free.

[In this case, he'd rather not be free, as she puts it; he's without a purpose now, and designating a new one for himself is proving difficult when there's really only one thing he cares about to make his purpose.]

You are free...for the time being. I heard...we will return to the moment we left our worlds.

That is what we are being told, but who is to say that is the truth? It could just be what they say to trick us into becoming detached from our prior obligations.

(Trust... is not so easily earned by her.) You phrased that in an interesting manner.

(He said that she was free, not that they both were free.)

[He averts his gaze, peering out to the middle distance instead. There’s no way to verify, but he's fairly certain he's dead, the true death of having his Core obliterated.]

[His old purpose—protect humans from Roidmude. But there are no Roidmude here.]

That claim... It wouldn’t keep you from finding a way back, will it? If your purpose in your world was important.

My purpose is important, this is true, but I would return to it regardless of that.

(She feels even more like an outsider here.) I think there's no right or wrong way to feel about being brought to another realm. It might seem scary at first, but it just might be the beginning of a new life with new purpose.

Long ago, I was a nobody. Then one day, new door opened and then I wasn't.

Beginning a new life doesn't sound bad.

[But now it's Chase's turn to regard the phrasing as strange; he sort of understands what someone being a "nobody" means, but... It reminds him a little of someone.]

...Do you have a sibling?

Yes, an older brother. (He's not here.

Of that, she's certain.)

If he were present, I would have been able to find him. We have a connection between us, as well as the others.

[Older brother-younger sister pair...different from what he was expecting. Then again, it's not reasonable to expect every pair to mirror the Shijima siblings.]

Then you've always been "somebody" to somebody.

[And if she doesn't believe that the Dreamfolk will be returned to the point in time that they left, it seems to Chase that making a new life isn't a real option. Then again, he is still thinking of the people he knows, who would labor to get back to their world.]

Will you take the chance to begin a new life?

(His comment makes her smile. How could she have forgotten? Diva loves her, even if she's not here ~~and was in the process of betraying him to save him but details...~~)

I did that once before. (Then she ended up here.

It's frustrating in a sense to have all of her hard work ripped out from beneath her though there is little point in expressing how disgruntled she is.)

I haven't fully decided what I will do here. First day jitters. (An easy thing to blame it on.) You?

I feel...the same. [He supposes; the only other time he remembers being this conflicted, he wound up technically returning to his old, original purpose instead of creating a new one.]

[...But it seems clear that neither of them are suited to petting bibirus in their new lives.]

It's only a new chance if it's— [He pauses, remembering the word Naesala gave him.] Comfortable. [Though that doesn't sound quite right, either.]

(The poor bibiru. They are just so accustomed to doing nothing other than look cute to receive pets and here they are, being denied of their purpose.)

Really? Is that how it is... (She doesn't sound all that convinced by that...)

Comfort is important, I agree, but nothing worth having ever came easy. Isn't that the common approach?

Perhaps...that wasn't the right word.

[He's quiet a moment as he thinks of the right way of putting it, but eventually gives up.]

Starting a new life is not that easy. [But he might not have a choice, at this point.] But, as long as we are here...we have to do something.

It would be a waste of time otherwise. (To not do anything, she means.)

At any rate, it's ample opportunity to learn something new.
