[EVENT] March Memory Madness

Characters: Everyone!
Date: March 5-9
Location: All around Aifaran
Situation: The Dreaming is a bit enthusiastic about the research at the Aisling Tower. Memories ensue.
Warnings/Rating: Shouldn't need any, but add to subject lines as needed!

Outside the Aisling Tower, the first clue anyone will have that something is wrong is small. Little things: trinkets lost, but fondly remembered, appearing in your hand when you reach for something else. A snatch of song that tugs your heartstrings.

That alone might have been nice. Unfortunately, things escalate quickly.

How did memories get loose on Aifaran?

Science Fair

Well that all went a bit wrong. Researchers at the Aisling Tower sent out a request for volunteers, hoping to get to the root causes of just why Dreamfolk frequently wind up with memory loss. The tests are reasonably painless beyond the occasional blood samples taken and rather tedious questionnaire volunteers must fill out.

And then there’s the machine.

It’s not big or scary looking - just a small, strangely organic looking earpiece linked up to a console used to measure neural oscillations. All very new, high-tech stuff that the researchers just barely control their enthusiasm about. Again, the tests are mostly tedious. Just a lot of sitting around while researchers display pictures, ask questions, have you smell a variety of scents, and other things to spark various mental associations. Though side-effects may include dizziness and nausea afterwards. It’s still a little bit too ‘mad science’ for some, even if the researchers involved don’t even cackle maniacally even once.

But as all things of this nature must go, something takes a turn for the weird.

Memories On Display

The Dreaming takes an interest, insofar as much as an omnipresent force of nature can be assumed to take an interest - maybe it just reacted strangely to the mental probing of the Dreamfolk. The how, for now, is not important.

The immediate problem is that memories are running rampant in the city - and not just from volunteers for the little research project, but also any Dreamfolk who come in contact with them. It starts off small - little things appearing in and out of your peripheral vision such as an old toy or a beloved pet. Maybe the echo of friendly laughter, or the incomplete form of a first love’s smile. These flashes of memory only grow more potent, however, as entire scenarios begin to play out for you and those in your proximity - just as vividly as you remember them. And just as accurately as you perceive them.

---

OOC Notes: Your characters will have the option of seeing memories play out, and/or being drawn into a mind-share memory experience-- basically, however you want to play it, the Dreaming will accommodate! It's also more than possible that the Dreaming will oblige if someone really wants to show someone else something specific-- but there may always be a little more than bargained for.

There is a specific starter for shenanigans at the Aisling Tower but the rest of the post is open!

Please address questions regarding the event to the monthly agenda post.

"Huh?"

Rokuta looks over, and the memory of modern-day Japan fizzles out and fades, taking the remembered frustration and fruitless searching with it, Aifaran taking its proper place around them.

"Oh, huh. You from Japan, too, then?"

Nevermind he'd almost said 'Yamato', shh.

"Mmm, from one of the districts in Tokyo. I think there's a few people here from Japan."

Conan looks up at him curiously. He'd been trying to meet the other dreamfolk, but he didn't think he'd met this one yet.

"I'm Conan Edogawa, by the way. I'm an elementary school detective."

Maybe he shouldn't have said 'too', considering that, aside from facial features, golden blond hair and purple eyes aren't particularly... Asian, as it were. He'd look different if they'd actually been anywhere in Japan.

"Huh, yeah, know someone from there as well," he says with an easy nod, pausing at the introduction for about a second, "Rokuta. Don't have a last name to give you. Wasn't really born late enough that was a thing for everybody."

He grins briefly as he says that; as hesitant as he's been to be too forthcoming about what he is in general, his past in Japan... he doesn't really mind bringing up, as much as it's something he prefers not to think about for himself.

True, they weren't common features. But Conan knew enough people from his own world with that coloring to not find it terribly remarkable. His mother was one of them. Not to mention all the Americans that had been staying around Tokyo recently.

Now that was a statement that caught Conan's attention. Once he would have protested that the idea of being from different times was nonsense. But his time here, both in Aifaran and Tu Shanshu, had had the effect of drastically redefining his idea of what was impossible and what was merely extremely improbable.

"Were you born before 1898, then?"

But that glimpse of a Japanese streets had been modern Japan. He was sure of it.
choseanidiot: (smiling - it works out in the end)

"Oh, yeah," he says, laughter threading through his voice and his grin widening, "definitely before that. Try to subtract a few more hundred years and you'll get far closer."

It's interesting that Conan had the date instantly... Sure, he can't say he's kept up his knowledge of when or what, exactly the kids in Japan are taught, but he's pretty sure that's not that common knowledge in someone that young. But it's probably got to do with the 'detective' bit, he supposes.

"But if you were born then, why do you remember Japan as it looks in my time?"

That was the question that puzzled him the most.
choseanidiot: (Talking - so you see...)

Completely reasonable confusion and question, leaving Rokuta to shrug.

"You know how we ended up here? That's happened to me more than once, though not involving this place," Rokuta says with a shrug, flicking hair off his shoulder as his gaze grow briefly distant, "That memory... was from when I was looking for somebody. Enough time had passed, so..."

Still looking, but he couldn't very well look for somebody that wasn't in this world, and with no easy (maybe, anyway) way to leave.

Fair enough. Conan had been around long enough to realize that different worlds could operate in very different ways.

"Did you ever find them? That person you were looking for?"
choseanidiot: (disguise - arms crossed)

"No." Reluctantly, he shakes his head. "Wish I could say I did, 'cause there's people who really need him, but so far I haven't had any luck. I was planning on making another trip soon. Then this happened."

Waving a hand around them to include them and their surroundings, Rokuta scowls. It figures. At least there's not actually any time passing... or something like that. He'll take it. However it works, he doesn't care, but as long as his absence isn't noticed, he can at least relax a little.

"Guessing you might know how hard it can be to find something when you don't got a thing to go by," he says with a wry little quirk to his lips - sure, 'detectives' aren't exactly something that exists where he's from, but he understands the meaning of the word, so it's not hard to extrapolate.
