[EVENT] March Memory Madness

Characters: Everyone!
Date: March 5-9
Location: All around Aifaran
Situation: The Dreaming is a bit enthusiastic about the research at the Aisling Tower. Memories ensue.
Warnings/Rating: Shouldn't need any, but add to subject lines as needed!

Outside the Aisling Tower, the first clue anyone will have that something is wrong is small. Little things: trinkets lost, but fondly remembered, appearing in your hand when you reach for something else. A snatch of song that tugs your heartstrings.

That alone might have been nice. Unfortunately, things escalate quickly.

How did memories get loose on Aifaran?

Science Fair

Well that all went a bit wrong. Researchers at the Aisling Tower sent out a request for volunteers, hoping to get to the root causes of just why Dreamfolk frequently wind up with memory loss. The tests are reasonably painless beyond the occasional blood samples taken and rather tedious questionnaire volunteers must fill out.

And then there’s the machine.

It’s not big or scary looking - just a small, strangely organic looking earpiece linked up to a console used to measure neural oscillations. All very new, high-tech stuff that the researchers just barely control their enthusiasm about. Again, the tests are mostly tedious. Just a lot of sitting around while researchers display pictures, ask questions, have you smell a variety of scents, and other things to spark various mental associations. Though side-effects may include dizziness and nausea afterwards. It’s still a little bit too ‘mad science’ for some, even if the researchers involved don’t even cackle maniacally even once.

But as all things of this nature must go, something takes a turn for the weird.

Memories On Display

The Dreaming takes an interest, insofar as much as an omnipresent force of nature can be assumed to take an interest - maybe it just reacted strangely to the mental probing of the Dreamfolk. The how, for now, is not important.

The immediate problem is that memories are running rampant in the city - and not just from volunteers for the little research project, but also any Dreamfolk who come in contact with them. It starts off small - little things appearing in and out of your peripheral vision such as an old toy or a beloved pet. Maybe the echo of friendly laughter, or the incomplete form of a first love’s smile. These flashes of memory only grow more potent, however, as entire scenarios begin to play out for you and those in your proximity - just as vividly as you remember them. And just as accurately as you perceive them.

---

OOC Notes: Your characters will have the option of seeing memories play out, and/or being drawn into a mind-share memory experience-- basically, however you want to play it, the Dreaming will accommodate! It's also more than possible that the Dreaming will oblige if someone really wants to show someone else something specific-- but there may always be a little more than bargained for.

There is a specific starter for shenanigans at the Aisling Tower but the rest of the post is open!

Please address questions regarding the event to the monthly agenda post.

He centered momentarily at the sound of her voice, kind of, it was a strange, indescribable feeling that she couldn't find words for. Half there, wherever 'there' was, and half here, yet still existing in the same place. His eyes were unfocused when they opened, but Valdis made no move to aid him when he moved, or when he slid back down the wall.

Her head hurt, whether transferring from his own pain, or from the aggravation of her less than amiable companion, she didn't know. Valdis moved a little closer, leaning her back against the wall, giving him plenty of room. She closed her eyes, humming a moment, then softly adding words. If he needed something to ground him, then perhaps it might help.

"The more you see the less you know
The less you find out as you go
I knew much more then than I do now.

Neon heart, day-glo eyes
The city lit by fireflies
They're advertising in the skies
For people like us...

"It is time you learn why you walk in sunlight."

The last echo of the memory rang in Devin's ears, leaving Valdis' voice as the only foreign one in his head. A prickle of static twined around his spine, and slowly, slowly abated. He didn't properly process what she was saying - no, what she was singing, that was definitely music. The exact words and melodies weren't important; what he focused on was the sound.

He took a breath, and then another, and another, each growing easier. His head still ached, but when Devin finally opened his eyes all he saw was the present.

"Didn't know you sang," he muttered from behind his hands, sighing. "Well, at least I'm conscious."

Whatever was going on in Devin's head as he fought his memories, it seemed to be passing. Slowly, surely, his aura seemed to steady, and thought it didn't quite settle with his breathing, it soon evened out entirely.

"I'm a woman of many talents," Valdis replied, watching him from the corner of one eye, "And it's generally good to have a few on your resume that aren't connected to chaos and death."

Not that many of her talents actually were connected to those things, but the fact they were there at all carried a bit more weight than the arts.

"Your memories seem to be a bit more physically painful than mine," she added, "Though I suppose having God in your head wouldn't be very pleasant no matter when it happened."

"It is a migraine unlike any other," Devin grumbled, resting his head on his knees. He would need hours to recover and more alcohol than he could afford. "Although that first time nearly put me in a coma. I was dysfunctional for almost a week."

His discussions with the Spirit had gotten easier on his mind and body as he grew older, but it remained a thoroughly unpleasant experience. He exhaled slowly; fortunately, he would not have to try to explain nearly as much to her as anyone else who might have viewed that memory.

"How much of that did you see?"

"See?" she asked, resting her head against the wall, "I didn't see anything, heard plenty though, well, enough at least to set off a panicked raging inside my head."

Fear wasn't something she ever expected from the Void, but neither was Devin having more than one conversation with the supposed God of all beings.

"I know neither of us are exactly normal for our kind, but I'm a bit surprised that your God is on your side, and mine is trying to kill me. Well, perhaps not surprised, but I don't trusts Gods, no matter what world they are from."

Telling him that having a god on your side would be helpful didn't exactly seem wise, Devin disliked everything about his situation.
