[EVENT] March Memory Madness

Characters: Everyone!
Date: March 5-9
Location: All around Aifaran
Situation: The Dreaming is a bit enthusiastic about the research at the Aisling Tower. Memories ensue.
Warnings/Rating: Shouldn't need any, but add to subject lines as needed!

Outside the Aisling Tower, the first clue anyone will have that something is wrong is small. Little things: trinkets lost, but fondly remembered, appearing in your hand when you reach for something else. A snatch of song that tugs your heartstrings.

That alone might have been nice. Unfortunately, things escalate quickly.

How did memories get loose on Aifaran?

Science Fair

Well that all went a bit wrong. Researchers at the Aisling Tower sent out a request for volunteers, hoping to get to the root causes of just why Dreamfolk frequently wind up with memory loss. The tests are reasonably painless beyond the occasional blood samples taken and rather tedious questionnaire volunteers must fill out.

And then there’s the machine.

It’s not big or scary looking - just a small, strangely organic looking earpiece linked up to a console used to measure neural oscillations. All very new, high-tech stuff that the researchers just barely control their enthusiasm about. Again, the tests are mostly tedious. Just a lot of sitting around while researchers display pictures, ask questions, have you smell a variety of scents, and other things to spark various mental associations. Though side-effects may include dizziness and nausea afterwards. It’s still a little bit too ‘mad science’ for some, even if the researchers involved don’t even cackle maniacally even once.

But as all things of this nature must go, something takes a turn for the weird.

Memories On Display

The Dreaming takes an interest, insofar as much as an omnipresent force of nature can be assumed to take an interest - maybe it just reacted strangely to the mental probing of the Dreamfolk. The how, for now, is not important.

The immediate problem is that memories are running rampant in the city - and not just from volunteers for the little research project, but also any Dreamfolk who come in contact with them. It starts off small - little things appearing in and out of your peripheral vision such as an old toy or a beloved pet. Maybe the echo of friendly laughter, or the incomplete form of a first love’s smile. These flashes of memory only grow more potent, however, as entire scenarios begin to play out for you and those in your proximity - just as vividly as you remember them. And just as accurately as you perceive them.

---

OOC Notes: Your characters will have the option of seeing memories play out, and/or being drawn into a mind-share memory experience-- basically, however you want to play it, the Dreaming will accommodate! It's also more than possible that the Dreaming will oblige if someone really wants to show someone else something specific-- but there may always be a little more than bargained for.

There is a specific starter for shenanigans at the Aisling Tower but the rest of the post is open!

Please address questions regarding the event to the monthly agenda post.

"You think so? Guess I'll have to cut them some slack, then." Trying to help can go wrong, but, upon reflection, it hasn't been too harmful... (So far. But they'll deal with that if it comes up, he supposes.)

"I'm not sure what memories have anything to do with it, though." Unless they really are 'dreaming' literally! But he couldn't have come up with anything like this from his own imagination. For one thing, his imagination would have made it more...space-like, for example, or a superhero city.

"Is your home like this?"

fff it happens!

"Who knows." He shrugs, not caring too much. As long as this gets fixed... preferably before he starts leaking anything more unpleasant than his own early dilemmas, though others have already had worse exposed.

Looking up again at the question, Rokuta chuckles, shaking his head.

"Like this? Not really, though it's got something in common with this place all right. People end up in my world from... ah, Japan and China every now and then, though there's not really any travelling between for those people as been implied here. What about you?"

"Heh. Guess it's kinda pointless to speculate." Not when they can ask them right out, and all. In any case, it's not like the effects are being subtle; the Tower probably has to make a public statement sometime.

And it looks like his little on-the-spot mostly-a-joke theory isn't looking like it holds too much water... "Traveling dimensions? Uh, I guess it's not really a thing. Just some holes sometimes that people fall through. How do people end up in your world?"
choseanidiot: (Talking - so you see...)

"Holes that people fall through?" That... sounds strange. And like there's more to it than that, but he twitches a shoulder in a one-shoulder shrug at the question, tipping his head sideways.

"Shoku. They're these... storms, magical storms I guess, so they breach the barrier between the two places and brings people across. Cause a whole lot of damage, too, especially on our side. Some people can travel back and forth under their own power, but that's a real small handful."

Rokuta shrugs properly this time. Doesn't mention the only way people from his world can end up on Earth, mostly because it'd require other, additional explanations... and derail the point a little.

"More like...tears?"

Rokuta's 'storm' description actually seems more accurate, though, even though Judai's world's version doesn't cause damage.

"How do the people who can travel with their own power do it, then?" Because if the answer is 'via comet', that'll be a weird coincidence.
choseanidiot: (profile - talking)

"Something like that, I guess," Rokuta agrees with a tilt of his head, then hesitates. Just for a beat or two, before he continues, "usually by creating their own very small shoku, that don't do any damage... it's about scale and the impact of the person passing through. Though some others do it in other ways..."

He shrugs. He knows some of the high ranking immortals can do it, either on their own or by some implement, but he hasn't exactly paid attention. It's not what he needs to go between, after all.

Oh, good, it wasn't via comet! There's gotta be a reason for Rokuta's hesitation, though, but Judai's probably pried enough at this point.

Still... "Sounds convenient. Think one of them will come looking for you?" Would be nice if one of them got to go home, huh?
choseanidiot: (sealed - thinking)

[personal profile] choseanidiot 2018-04-29 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not via comet!

"Not sure it works that way... None of us who come here in the same way have done so under our own power, right? Even if we could. I think the planes being in turmoil like they are..."

He frowns, gesturing up at the sky even if it's completely clear at the moment. Not that he means the physical weather, right now.

"Well, it's probably affecting things, for us as well as anyone who might have the ability to come get us."

He'd only tried, partway only even, to create a shoku, and had stopped before it'd even fully formed. It hadn't been doing what it should have.

"On the other hand, that might make things even easier." Because hey, gotta look on the bright side, right?

But he actually is joking. For all of the methods with which Judai has been drawn into other worlds, he knows it isn't quite that simple.

"I guess the barrier isn't there for no reason." He looks up at it, both at Rokuta's gesture and because the barrier is faintly visible if he's looking for it. "Wonder if that affects thing, too."
choseanidiot: (thinking - so you see we can't do that)

[personal profile] choseanidiot 2018-05-02 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's optimistic," Rokuta scoffs, but he flashes a little grin shortly after, "and maybe it does. Since it has to be strong enough to keep just this part of the world safe, and we're talking other planes involved..."

He shrugs. Who knows? The whole upheaval with the elemental planes that's left this world in a mess still after so long is clearly massive and far-reaching, so that it might have an effect on the Dreamfolk pulled in and how they are so, wouldn't be particularly strange, right?
