ahoy matey
Characters: Jacen and Bastien
Date: November 28th, early evening
Location: Aifaran docks
Situation: Jacen broods about his (dead) brother and makes friends with a merpirate?
Warnings/Rating: None yet, will add if something comes up.
[ Jacen watches the sunset from the docks, sitting on the edge of one of the ramps extending further out into the sea with his toes brushing idly against the water. He can't say he's a fan of the water, not particularly, but there's something about the bustle of the area that's familiar and comforting. Maybe because of the coming and going of the ships, although the ships of his world are more of the aerial kind.
He's experienced quite a few strange things in the weeks he's been in Aifaran, but his thoughts keep drifting back to his brother, who'd died in his universe but who he'd also been briefly reunited with in this peculiar world. He'd thought that had been the Force's reason for bringing him to Aifaran — to make amends and to make things right — but he'd allowed himself to think he had all the time in the galaxy that by the time Anakin had disappeared, he'd actually... not done anything. Except maybe spend a bit more time being the older brother he should've been.
The batcat on his shoulder interrupts his brooding, though, licking his ear affectionately. He laughs. ] Cut it out, Annie. I'm fine. [ Yes, he's changed her name, to something more personal. ]

That strange urge to hunt still pesters Bastien out of cold sleep and has him waddling towards the shore for a dip. Only after the cold tide touches his fins, does he feel alive again. There's an odd thrill with being able to hunt and swim so freely. Bastien lived most of his life perpetrating a lie, pretending to be human. Here in this odd realm, Bastien doesn't have to pretend anymore. In fact, he's being encouraged to himself and not the bastardly pirate he pretends to be. That's why he enjoys it out here so much.
Bastien is finally living his best life.]
...Hm? [A curious hum escapes him once he spots something poking into the water from above. Bastien is completely submerged underwater, his blue fins glittering silver within these murky depths. He isn't aware of the odd glow he possesses underwater or the strange ethereal amber gleam in his eyes as he swims. Bastien almost takes on another form all together when he's in fins and scales. More serpentine-like but shockingly graceful in appearance.
The mermaid blinks eyes when he sees that odd numb touching the surface again, those bright yellowish eyes gleaming with interest. Still feeling quite peckish, Bastien quickly swims up towards that curious numb and tries to bite it. Maybe it's some kind of food! Like a fish or an eel or something. Whatever Bastien thought it was, he hadn't expected it to be a toe.]

But as he stands there staring down at the shadow lurking beneath the water, he frowns. There's something familiar about this one, but he can't quite put a finger to it. There's a certain human quality to the presence he's sensing, and an undercurrent of power that seems to belong to the sea. Plus it almost feels like he knows this creature, like he's met it before.
Has he?
He crouches, extending his hand to the water, fingertips just barely touching the surface. He sends a message through the Force; to Bastien it would feel as if Jacen's spoken directly to his mind. ]
Hey there. Don't be a stranger.

So cue in the oddest fish Jacen probably ever seen in his life. Bastien peeks his head out from the water, his eyes still glowing amber as they adjust to the sunlight. He stares at the lad for a moment, his gaze slowly changing back to brown.]
Oh! [Bastien grins a little.] I remember you! You're that funny lad that joined Trahearne and I.

It’s not that he hasn’t seen all sorts of creatures before; the galaxy’s a huge place, after all. But now he realizes why he’s found the other’s presence in the Force familiar — because they have met. ]
Oh. Hey. [ His expression quickly relaxes into a teasing grin. ] Please tell me you did not just try to eat my foot.

[The face Bastien makes his hilarious marred in disgust now. If there's one thing he doesn't eat, it's humans. His mother and the other merfolks eat humans but not him. Bastien likes to think he's too civilized for that but he could eat a person. After all, he has sharp teeth.]
Sorry, mate! [He chuckles nervously while scratching the back of his head.] I thought that was a fishie!
[This silly merpirate...]

It’s okay. You gotta eat, right? I just have to put a warning label on my toes next time. [ Don’t look so pleased, Jace. Your jokes aren’t funny. Never have been.
He then looks at Bastien curiously. ] Didn’t you say you were a pirate?
no subject
Haha! There won't be a next time, lad. [He claims as he crossed his hand over his chest.] Cross my weasely black heart, mate! You won't become lunch.
[At the next question, Bastien couldn't help but laugh heartily.]
That I am, lad! The best pirate you'll ever see but my mum was a mermaid, thus I'm the first 'merpirate' in history.

[ Not that Jacen’s ever had a lot of trouble convincing other creatures that he’s not lunch material. He’s always had an affinity for wildlife, one of his peculiar Force abilities.
Bastien’s laugh is contagious, though, and in no time the lad is laughing as well. Strangely enough, he feels at ease with the merpirate; maybe because he’s part sea creature, which Jacen has a soft spot for, and part scoundrel, like Jacen’s dad. ] I can’t say I’ve heard of merpirates in the worlds I’ve been to, so yeah, I think we can go with First Merpirate. Did the Dreaming do you the courtesy of bringing your ship with you?

[Bastien can't help but frown a little. He's still mad at himself for sinking so low. Usually he would've let such a pretty young thing go but he was desperate and confused. Bastien had a rough arrival.]
Merfolks are a rarity in general, so I'm a certain I'm the first merpirate in this part of the sea. [He grins toothily at Jacen as he attempts to climb onto the pier. It's a little bit of a challenge when he lacks legs but Bastien manages with ease despite being completely drenched. The merpirate is far stronger than he seems.]
Unfortunately, no! Me ship sank to the bottom of the sea prior with my poor...[A sigh escapes him.] Poor crew.

[ At the mention of Valdis, Jacen’s expression is a mix of amusement and disbelief. He attempted to mug her, really? Bastien’s either brave or stupid to try. ] Valdis is definitely someone you don’t mug. Not sure about mean, but she’s pretty intimidating. [ And pretty. But Jacen doesn’t say that.
He then watches Bastien climb up the pier beside them, and while he’s initially grinning at the other’s antics and generally fun nature, he finds himself sighing as well when the merpirate mentions losing his crew.
Jacen looks away, back to the horizon, his gaze distant. ] Yeah, I know what that’s like. I... lost some friends, too.
